Pros and Cons of Taking Admission in FAST NUCES for BS CS in 2024
FAST National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences is considered one of the top choices for students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in Pakistan. With campuses in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, and Chiniot-Faisalabad, FAST has earned a strong reputation for producing high-quality Computer Science graduates over the years.
FAST is undoubtedly a leading option for a BS in Computer Science in Pakistan. However, like any institution, it has its pros and cons that every prospective student should consider before making a decision. In this blog, I will outline the key advantages and disadvantages of studying at FAST to help you determine whether it is the right fit for you.
Pros:
Strong Reputation in the Market:
As mentioned earlier, FAST has a solid reputation for producing top-notch Computer Science graduates. This strong brand name provides an edge in the IT job market, with many employers recognizing the quality of education and skills that FAST graduates bring. Consequently, FAST alumni often benefit from high placement rates and competitive job opportunities.
Strong Alumni Network:
FAST National University has a fantastic alumni network that spans both Pakistan and the globe. Many FAST graduates have landed impressive roles at top tech companies, including those in FAANG (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google). The university’s impact even caught the attention of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who sent a letter of appreciation. Plus, you’ll find that many successful software company founders and CEOs in Pakistan are FAST alumni. This strong network can provide current students with valuable connections and opportunities in the tech industry, making it a great asset for anyone looking to advance their career.
Polishes Your Technical Skills:
At FAST National University, you’ll build solid technical skills thanks to a team of experienced and knowledgeable faculty. The coursework, including assignments, projects, and exams, is designed to be challenging, which helps improve your problem-solving abilities. This hands-on approach ensures you get practical experience and become well-prepared for a career in technology.
Outstanding Faculty and Infrastructure:
FAST National University boasts some of the best faculty in Pakistan, featuring highly qualified lecturers and professors who excel in their fields. Beyond the top-notch teaching staff, the university also provides state-of-the-art computer labs essential for a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. These well-equipped labs and the excellent faculty combine to set a high standard of education, making FAST an exceptional place for learning and development.
Cons:
High Academic Pressure:
Expect a challenging and demanding journey as a student at FAST National University. The workload is heavy, with rigorous assignments, quizzes, midterms, and final exams. Balancing this workload with part-time work can be very difficult, especially compared to more flexible options like virtual universities. Many students find the academic pressure overwhelming, and some even decide to leave after the first semester. If you’re considering joining FAST while working part-time, be prepared for a tough ride, as the university’s intense academic environment doesn’t easily accommodate a flexible schedule.
Difficulty in Achieving a High GPA:
Even if you’re a top student, securing a high GPA at FAST National University can be tough. The rigorous grading and challenging coursework mean that even with hard work, you might end up with a lower CGPA than you expect. This is especially important if you’re considering applying for scholarships abroad, where a high GPA is often crucial. While other universities might offer an easier path to a high GPA, FAST’s demanding standards might make it harder to achieve the scores needed for international scholarships. If you’re aiming for a strong academic record for future opportunities, keep in mind that FAST’s rigorous environment could impact your GPA.
Getting Admission Can Be Tough:
As one of the top choices for students pursuing a BS in Computer Science, gaining admission to FAST National University can be highly competitive. The demand for this program is high, with BSCS merit reaching unprecedented levels. The trend has shifted significantly from traditional engineering disciplines like Civil and Electrical Engineering, making Computer Science the most sought-after field at prestigious universities such as UET, NUST, and others. Consequently, the competition for spots in FAST’s BSCS program is very high. However, there is a slight variation in merit requirements across different campuses. For instance, the FAST Chiniot-Faisalabad campus generally has a slightly lower merit threshold compared to the Lahore and Islamabad campuses, mainly due to its more remote location. Despite this, gaining admission to any FAST campus remains a challenging endeavor.
Campus Life Not Very Amazing:
While FAST National University offers over 20 societies and organizes major tech events like Softech in Lahore, the overall campus life may not be as vibrant as one might hope. The intense academic pressure often leaves students with little time to enjoy these opportunities. Additionally, the Lahore campus lacks substantial sports facilities and green spaces, limiting options for physical activities and relaxation. While other FAST campuses might have different amenities, the Lahore campus is particularly constrained in this regard. In contrast, universities like UET, NUST, and UOL provide larger campus areas with better facilities, contributing to a more enriching campus experience for their students.
Final Thoughts
Having outlined the pros and cons, here’s my personal opinion: The academic pressure at FAST National University is undeniably intense. The rigorous assignments, quizzes, and exams can leave little room for relaxation over the four years of a BS program, and it’s possible that your degree could be delayed by up to six months if you encounter any academic setbacks.
However, all this effort is worth it. The reputation and competitive edge that FAST alumni enjoy in the hiring process cannot be overlooked. The challenges faced during your studies are what ultimately prepare you for a successful career in the IT industry. Many of the leading names in Pakistan’s tech sector are FAST graduates, and it’s this rigorous academic environment that has helped hone their skills.
So, if you’re ready to commit fully and aren’t seeking a more flexible option like a virtual university, FAST is an excellent choice. The pressure is significant, but in the end, the rewards make it all worthwhile.
